Harbor House Café, Sunset Beach
)

Located on the coast at 16341 Pacific Coast Highway in Sunset Beach, right between Seal Beach & Huntington Beach.
Harbor House is a main-stay for the regulars, but always greets travelers with a smile for over 65 years - and they are
open 24 hours a day!
Have a craving at 2AM? This is your kind of place. I've been here around that time, and they're still busy! Parking is OK,
but on weekends you'll have to go looking for a spot to park.
Breakfast favorites such as the Mexican omelet (they have 14 omelets on the menu) stuffed with beef fajitas, peppers
and covered with Spanish sauce & cheese (my favorite), Halibut steak & eggs, Chorizo & egg burrito are served along
with your standard items like pancakes (Mom likes 'em), French toast and steak & eggs. You’d think it was Texas, 'cause
all the portions are huge! Lunch is equally big with crisp salads and sandwiches. You gotta try the hot crab meat
sandwich, but the chili-size will fill you up jus' fine. The dinner line-up has some great steaks (New York for me), a few
chicken dishes (Crispy Fried Chicken like Mom used to make), but the seafood here is king. Try the Jumbo Shrimp, the
scallops, or the halibut is very good. They have a pretty good dessert menu, but usually I'm stuffed!
Anytime - day or night is the right time for Harbor House Café.

                Finbars Italian Kitchen, Seal Beach

I had driven past Finbars many times without giving them much notice until I finally decided to drop in for dinner – I’m
glad I did! What impressed me most here was the passion all the staff has for their food. The hostess, the bus boys, our
waitress and the manager all were extremely attentive, professional and had a good understanding of their food. This to
me is unusual. When I usually ask someone a question like: “What kind of cheese is this?” I usually get either “I don’t
know” or “I’ll go ask.” Here, I got good answers from people who were truly interested in what they were doing and what
they were serving. OK – on to the food.

I had the Herb-crusted Salmon with Honey Dijon sauce. Perfectly done, but just a bit under-seasoned. Mom had the BBQ
Chicken Pizza from the “Left Coast Specialty Pizzas” section of the menu. She loved it. Finbars has other “Left Coast”
menu items like Chicken Tequila Fusilli pasta and Pad Thai Linguine. I love to see this kind of fusion cuisine. With a
respectable selection of pastas, ravioli, lasagna, pizzas and soups & salads, Finbars is sure to please. Their Tiramisu
was excellent! By accident, an almost full portion of it fell on the floor – the waitress saw me – and soon came back,
cleaned up and brought me a new piece. What service! I have been back here a few times, with more trips planned.

The Shore House Café, Seal Beach

"A reputation for outstanding food and enormous portions!" boldly printed on the cover page of their menu. Do they live
up to this? Read on.
I have eaten at the Shore House Café in Long Beach (Belmont Shore) in the past, but was not impressed. Mom and I
went to their Seal Beach location, and I was really impressed! The menu was also laid out well, and frankly made me
hungry!
I ordered the Machaca & eggs. One of my favorites since I tried it at a little place in Wilmington called Margo & Manny's
(out of business). I have measured everyone's Machaca against theirs - none had been better (Chuck's in Belmont
Shore, close). Well, the Shore House not only is as good, but better! Lean string beef, tomatoes, green onions, lots of
cheese and just the right spices. This was under the heading: "Extra Special Breakfast." Also here was the New England
Lump Crab cake benedict (next time?), Carne Asada & eggs, Mexican scramble and others. Mom was amazed at the size
of the pancakes, as well as the taste and flavor (ranking forthcoming, I expect). The menu is big - 11 pages. (I love a
challenge - bring it on!)
Under "House Specialties" are Open faced 10oz. Rib eye steak sandwich, Chicken & Biscuits, Homemade Meatloaf, as
well as a BBQ beef sandwich and others. (Road trip!) Their appetizer menu has a lot of seafood including lump crab
cakes and calamari. Besides this, there is Stone-Hearth Pizza, Pasta, Calzones, Mexican food, Steaks, Ribs, Seafood,
Sandwiches, Mega-Burgers, and lots I gotta try. The Steak Diane sounds interesting - 12oz. sirloin, skillet seared and
deglazed with cognac, Dijon mustard & cream. Their Lava cake for dessert could put my low carb diet in trouble.
I will post another after I've had dinner here. I only hope they can live up to the quality I've experienced at breakfast.

The Beach Boys, Jan & Dean, The Mamas & the Papas..... groovin' to the great old beach tunes is something I look
forward to each time I visit Woody's Diner. To me, Woody's is the quintessential beach café. The chain has four locations:
Sunset Beach (above), Seal Beach (see photo below), Huntington Beach and Newport beach. Great food, service and
tunes - totally awesome, dude!

Serving breakfast, lunch & dinner, Woody's aims to please everybody. Very family friendly and welcoming, I have been
coming here long enough to watch families growing up here. Mom's favorite? Can't you guess by now? "The Diner" is
Woody's take on the time tested pancake sandwich. They will serve you both regular pancake syrup and boysenberry
with your cakes or French toast. My favorite is an omelet called "The Woody" - A 3 egg omelet stuffed to overflowing
with ham, sausage, bacon, onions, and covered with cheddar cheese, sour cream and avocado. Gotta have their salsa
on top too! I honestly believe I could eat this 5 days a week without getting tired of it. The "breakfast Burrito" is great for
the surfers on the go, while the huevos rancheros is very tasty. Try the "Hawaiian" omelet if you're looking for
something a little different. Breakfast at Woody's is tops! Woody's also has your basic egg & meat choices, waffles and
hot coffee. Good burgers, descent chili, pasta, steak, and chicken. Their salads are very good, and very filling.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner, -  I can't imagine how you could have a bad time surfin' and crusin' with the surf classics.

Open 7 days a week - the Sunset Beach restaurant is located at 16371 Pacific Coast Hwy. Phone: (562) 592-2134 & the
Seal Beach restaurant is located at 209 Main Street. Phone: (562) 598-6794

Kinda Lahaina Broiler, Seal Beach, CA

Back after a recent remodel due to a fire, "Kinda" Lahaina Broiler is better than ever! The restaurant has lost a little of
it's "beachiness", (if that's a word) and the remodel has taken them a bit upscale. I miss the feeling the restaurant used
to elicit (being on vacation in Hawaii, or some island in the south pacific), however the service and the friendliness of
the staff has improved.

Located at the end of Main Street adjacent to the Seal Beach pier, Kinda Lahaina Broiler is sort of like an American diner
gone Hawaiian - sort of. Their menu is a mix of American favorites, some Hawaiian dishes, a little Mexican food and a
little of this & that. I like this place - don't get me wrong. But, Hawaiian? - Not exactly. My favorite egg dish is the Texas
Barroom (see what I mean?) A mix of scrambled eggs, spicy ground beef, onions & tomatoes - topped with cheese and
salsa. A really rich egg dish is the O.P. Pro omelet. Real crab meat (not spelled with a "K"), cheese, asparagus - topped
with hollandaise sauce. Very rich and very good. Uncle Dougies 2X2X2 is Mom's favorite de jour. Two eggs, two
pancakes, and two slices of bacon. (More later)
